Superyacht Crew Christmas Ideas: 20 Things I Do as Chief Stewardess to Make December Feel Special 🎄

Christmas onboard is one of my absolute favourite times of the year, and it can feel really magical when everyone gets involved. If you’re looking for superyacht crew Christmas ideas, here are some of the things I love doing onboard that make December feel special.

A large superyacht with beautiful blue water in the background.

Full disclosure: I’m British, so my idea of Christmas is cold weather, fairy lights everywhere, and hot drinks that may or may not be mulled wine 😌 – so most of my festive ideas lean towards cosy winter vibes.

By mid-September, I’m already creeping into festive mode, November is twinkly-lights energy, and by December 1st I’m in unapologetic full sleigh mode (where Christmas is a HOD meeting agenda item every week).

Quick PSA before we start 💅 – every yacht is different. Budgets, alcohol rules, guest schedules, captains… all totally vary. So take what works for your boat and ignore the rest. But in an ideal world, this is what I’d do. Steal freely and make it your own.

(If you’re new to yachting and reading this thinking “I’d actually love to work on a boat like this”, how you present yourself at the start really matters. I’ve put together a Superyacht CV Guide + editable Canva CV templates to help you explain your experience clearly and professionally, without sounding generic or copy-paste.)

Let’s get into the ideas that lift morale and make the season feel special.❤️🎄

Superyacht Crew Christmas Ideas: The Run-Up to Christmas On Board

Here are some simple ideas that can help make December feel festive without being stressful or cheesy – just little moments that the crew genuinely appreciate. But first and most importantly…

#1. Festive Playlist 🎶

Christmas songs are an absolute must from December 1st. Some people moan, some act personally offended by Michael Bublé’s existence, but I LOVE them and refuse to apologise for it 😂

Get your playlist ready ahead of time and hit play the second December arrives – instant festive energy.

Here’s mine if you want to set the vibe while you scroll (hit play and let Mariah do her thing):

You can also set up a shared playlist and let everyone add their favourites – it’s actually such a cute way to learn what different cultures consider “essential Christmas music”.

#2. Elf on the Shelf

The interior team usually love getting involved with this – you’ll always have a couple of Stews who are very passionate about creative elf placement 😂 – but anyone who fancies it can take a turn.

You can rotate responsibility so someone new hides the elf each day and comes up with a funny scenario. Nothing complicated or time-consuming, just lighthearted mischief that makes people smile when they’re half-asleep at breakfast.

#3. Chocolate Advent Calendars

Classic and always a win. One for each crew member feels really special and marks the countdown together – and even if someone doesn’t eat theirs, it’s still such a cute gesture that people appreciate.

#4. Christmas Movie Nights

Easy, cosy and low-effort. Put on something festive in the crew mess, crew lounge, or wherever there’s a TV and space to snack. Add popcorn, chocolate, blankets and some fairy lights if you’re feeling fancy. People come and go, chat through half the film, eat everything in sight – perfect.

Some of my faves:

  • The Holiday
  • Home Alone
  • Christmas with the Kranks (the funniest – Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen!)
  • Elf
  • The Grinch
  • Love Actually
  • Miracle on 34th Street (Richard Attenborough, he is my #1 Santa!)
  • The Santa Clause (Tim Allen again!)
  • Red One
  • Die Hard (for the “it is a Christmas movie” brigade)
  • Bridget Jones & Harry Potter (if we’re including Die Hard, these also count 😂)

#5. Cheese & Wine Night

Pick a night in December (or several!) and put out a simple spread – a few cheeses, crackers, olives, and some vino. Nothing fancy, just something social and a little different from the usual evening vibe. Crew love it.

Chat with the galley about putting together a board (they always have fabulous ideas!)

This is SUCH a cute December activity. You can do simple Christmas cookie decorating (icing, sprinkles – the usual) or go full gingerbread house mode if the galley has time to help with pieces, or you can just buy the kits.

If you want to take it up a level, you can turn it into a friendly competition where people are in teams and present their house. My previous boat did this before I joined, and the stories about it are HILARIOUS.

Low cost, high entertainment value.

🎁 Things to Prep / Buy Ahead

A few small bits organised early make December feel way less chaotic and keep the vibe festive instead of stressful.

ALSO – when you go provisioning before Christmas, make sure you have enough stuff to get you through to the first week of January! You don’t want to be messing about over Christmas week because you’ve run out of toilet roll!

#7. Decorations

Fairy lights, tinsel, Christmas trees, baubles, wreaths – whatever suits your boat’s style, size and budget. Even a tiny bit of decor makes the crew mess feel different and Christmassy.

#8. Stockings

If possible, it’s great to have one per person, so on Christmas day everyone has a stocking – you can fill it with chocolate coins, a candy cane and a Christmas card – or if you have time and budget for it, get a little stocking filler gift for everyone.

Last year, we designated some of the Christmas budget to getting little stocking fillers for everyone, it worked out about 10 euros per person. We managed to get things like mini toiletries, funky socks, hair scrunchies, claw clips, or whatever else we could find that suited each person (in Spain, Ale Hop is always a winner!)

#9. Santa Hats & Costumes

Santa hat for everyone (if they want one), and a Santa suit + Mrs Claus outfit always finds a purpose – photos, surprise entrances, handing out Secret Santa gifts, or just lols.

#10. Festive Extras to Buy

  • Christmas crackers
  • Table decorations
  • Napkins / placements / cute disposable plates if needed
  • Paper straws

#11. Wrapping Station

If you have the space, set up a little wrapping station somewhere accessible so crew can grab what they need to wrap gifts without stealing scissors from the laundry room.

Things to include:

  • Wrapping paper (a few options)
  • Ribbon & bows
  • Gift tags / labels
  • Sellotape dispensers (plural, because they disappear like socks in a tumble dryer)
  • Scissors
  • Pens / markers

#12. Polaroid / Instant Photos 🎞

This is one of my favourite little ideas — leave a Polaroid/Instax camera out for the day so people can snap photos throughout Christmas Eve / Christmas Day. Crew LOVE it, and it’s such a cute way to capture memories when you’re away from home. You can pin them on the crew mess board, or let everyone take one home with them. Feel-good levels: high.

#13. Snacks & Festive Treats for Christmas Week 🍫

Christmas week is pure sugar-and-cheese survival mode, and nobody knows what day it is. Put out a snack spread around Christmas Eve / Christmas Day and the vibe changes instantly.

Some favourites:

  • Quality Street
  • Celebrations
  • After Eights
  • Toblerone
  • Terry’s Chocolate Orange
  • Panettone
  • Christmas-shaped pretzels (Carrefour has them)
  • Nice chips (any flavour that won’t spark a riot)

And it’s really nice to look at what nationalities you have onboard and include traditional snacks from their cultures too – it makes people feel seen and included, and introducing each other to festive foods from home is such a lovely moment.

🍸 Drinks & Christmas Day Traditions

Christmas Day onboard is normally (hopefully) a day off (unless guests are on), so it’s the perfect chance to do a few relaxed, fun things that make it feel like Christmas, not just another day wandering around the crew mess with a coffee.

# 14. Baileys by the Coffee Machine

This is honestly one of my favourite things about Christmas Day. Just stick a bottle of Baileys next to the machine first thing in the morning and it’s instant joy.

#15. Mimosas When Everyone Walks Into the Crew Mess

OJ and bubbles to start the day sets the tone perfectly. It feels celebratory without being over the top.

#16. Glühwein / Mulled Wine Recipe 🍷

This is my absolute favourite Glühwein recipe, (it’s from All Recipes), and I will die on the hill that it is the best mulled wine recipe in existence. I’ve tried others, I’ve experimented, I’ve lived, laughed and learned – and nothing beats this one.

If you’re making it for crew… double, triple, or quadruple it because it disappears immediately.

Ingredients

  • 175ml water
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 1 bottle red wine

Method

  1. In a saucepan, add the water, sugar and cinnamon stick. Bring it to the boil, then turn the heat down and let it simmer.
  2. Cut the orange in half and squeeze the juice into the pan. Push the cloves into the outside of the orange peel (like a little clove hedgehog) and drop the peel into the simmering liquid.
Let it simmer for around 30 minutes until it goes thick and syrupy.
  3. Pour in the red wine and heat it gently until it’s hot and steaming – but don’t let it boil (otherwise the alcohol will vanish and we don’t want that 💀)
  4. Remove the clove-studded orange peel and serve hot in mugs or heatproof glasses.

That’s it. Minimal effort, maximum cosy Christmas vibes.

#17. Secret Santa Backups

A tiny hack that saves hearts: have a couple of spare wrapped gifts ready just in case someone forgot theirs or plans changed. No one should feel left out on Christmas.

#18. Games

After lunch, people usually want something fun and easy. Mafia / Wolf, Heads Up, charades, Christmas trivia – whatever people feel like. It doesn’t need officially organising, it just happens, and it’s always hilarious. (Have some options available to play!)

#19. The YouTube Fireplace on the TV

This is such a tiny thing but honestly changes everything — put the YouTube fireplace on the TV in the crew mess on Christmas Day (or all of Christmas week). It makes the space feel warm and cosy instantly, especially if you’re somewhere sunny and pretending it’s winter. Crew LOVE it.

#20. Secret Santa 🎁

If you’re doing Secret Santa onboard, keeping it simple and practical is always a win. Things like mini coffee syrups, scrunchies, satin sleep masks, silk pillowcases, and cosy socks always go down well for the girls – small treats people actually use.

Still working on my gift guide for the guys – coming soon once I figure out what men actually want other than torches, protein and car parts 😂

For now, if you need easy inspiration for female gifts, I’ve already put together two guides with loads of ideas you can literally just click and buy (Amazon links included, so no thinking required):

I’ve had some truly brilliant Christmases onboard, honestly. When everyone gets involved, it can be such a fun and memorable day. And yes – it can be an emotional time for anyone missing home, kids, partners or family traditions, which is exactly why it’s worth putting in the effort.

It brings everyone together in such a lovely way, and turns the day into something people actually look forward to, rather than just something to get through.

Hope these superyacht crew Christmas ideas help make your December onboard feel really special. If you have other ideas or traditions, I’d love to hear them so we can all steal them for next year 🎄❤️
