The 2026 Gym Girl Leg Day: 6 Exercises That Actually Work (No Squats)

If you’re starting the gym in 2026, getting back into it, or you’re ready to level up your leg days without traumatising yourself under a squat rack, you’re in the right place – the 2026 Gym Girl Leg Day is for you.

✨ Quick PSA

I’m not a personal trainer and I’m definitely not a bodybuilder – I just genuinely love training and feeling strong.
I’m in the gym pretty much every day because I enjoy it, not because I’m trying to win trophies or enter a deadlift competition 😂

Squats and deadlifts are great – love that for the girlies who enjoy them.

Personally? I don’t like them, so I don’t do them.

And when someone tells me I have to squat or deadlift to grow legs, I’m like… babe, please. We’re all just trying to survive out here 😂

There are plenty of ways to build strong legs without annihilating your spine or ugly-crying under a barbell.
Just simple exercises, done consistently and heavy enough that the last two reps feel like emotional damage.

No circus workouts.

No 15-move leg days.

Just six exercises I do every single leg day – and they work.

I like having legs that feel powerful, let me run without wanting to die, and look great in a mini dress. (I get a lot of compliments on them, so something’s working 😂)

For context, I can single-leg press 120kg and rear kickback 175kg per leg – so strong legs without squats or deadlifts is absolutely a thing, and I’m really happy with that.

Right. Let’s lift.

🍑 Why You Don’t Need Squats or Deadlifts

You don’t need traditional squats or deadlifts if they don’t suit your body or goals.
But you do need:

👉🏼 Progressive overload (lift heavier over time)
👉🏼 Training near failure (last 2 reps should be spicy af)
👉🏼 Fewer, better exercises – done well and consistently

(You can’t glute-kickback your way to Stallion legs using 2kg ankle weights, sorry 🐎😂)

🍑 The 2026 Gym Girl Leg Day Workout (No Squats)

This is exactly what I do every single leg day – in this order.

Pick a weight that scares you slightly (in a good way).

4 sets each, 8–12 reps, controlled form, full intensity.

#1. Hip Thrusts

Illustration of a woman performing barbell hip thrusts on a bench in two positions — starting position and lifted position — wearing a pink crop top and black shorts in a gym setting.
  • Gym: Barbell hip thrusts on a bench (I like to use the Smith Machine and a bench for this.)
  • Home: Hip bridges with a backpack or dumbbell

How to:

  • Sit on the floor with your upper back against a bench or sofa.
  • Roll a barbell (or backpack) over your hips.
  • Keep your chin tucked forward and facing forward (don’t move your neck side to side!).
  • With the bar on your hips, drive up through your heels lifting your butt up, squeezing your glutes hard at the top.
  • Lower slowly and repeat.

💡 Focus on: Squeezing your glutes at the top and keeping your ribs tucked down (no flaring your chest).

#2. Bulgarian Split Squats

Illustration of a woman doing Bulgarian split squats on a bench, showing standing and lowered positions, wearing a pink crop top and black shorts in a gym environment.
  • Gym: Dumbbells (optional), back foot on a bench
  • Home: Two water bottles (optional), back foot on the couch

How to:

  • Stand about 2 feet in front of a bench or couch.
  • Rest one foot behind you on a bench or couch.
  • Bend your front knee and lower yourself down into a lunge.
  • Push through your front heel to stand back up.

💡 Focus on: Leaning slightly forward to hit the glutes more, keeping your front knee tracking over your toes (not collapsing inward).

#3. Leg Press

Illustration of a woman performing a leg press on a gym machine, pushing the platform with her feet while wearing a pink crop top, black shorts and ponytail.
  • Gym: Leg press machine (can also do one leg at a time)
  • Home: Heavy goblet squats with dumbbell/backpack

How to Leg Press:

  • Sit down and place your feet shoulder-width apart on the platform.
  • Push through your heels to extend your legs (don’t lock out knees).
  • Lower the platform slowly until your knees are at 90 degrees.

💡 Focus on: Pressing through your heels and keeping your knees from falling inwards.

#4. Leg Extensions

Illustration of a woman using a leg extension machine, showing bent and fully extended leg positions, wearing a pink crop top and black shorts.
  • Gym: Leg extension machine
  • Home: Wall sits

How to do Leg Extensions:

  • Sit on the seat and tuck your shins behind the pad
  • Straighten your legs against the resistance until fully extended.
  • Pause at the top, squeeze your quads, then lower slowly.

💡 Focus on: Smooth controlled movements, not swinging. Think: slow up, slow down.

#5. Hamstring Curls

  • Gym: Hamstring curl machine

How to:

  • Lie face down on the machine, positioning your ankles under the padded bar.
  • Curl your legs upward, then slowly return to the start.

💡 Focus on: Go slow for maximum hamstring and booty burn.

#5. Glute Kickbacks

Illustration of a woman performing cable kickbacks in two movement positions, wearing a pink crop top and black shorts in a gym environment.
  • Gym: Kickback machine or cables
  • Home: Resistance band donkey kicks

How to:

  • Attach an ankle strap to the cable machine.
  • Kick one leg back while keeping your core engaged, then return to the start.
  • You might have a glute kickback machine there too, those are great! Same thing, you just have something to learn your chest on!

💡 Focus on: Keeping your core braced and moving through the glutes – not flinging your leg up like a wild donkey. 😂

🔥 Finish with one of these:

✅ Rowing Sprints

  • Hop on the rowing machine at level 4-5.
  • Sprint for 30 seconds as hard as you can, then take 15 seconds rest.
  • Do this 5 times.

✅ Incline Treadmill Walk (Gym/Home Treadmill)

  • 10–15 minutes on the treadmill with an incline of 6-12%, brisk pace (5.5–6km/h).

💡 Focus on: Strong posture, glutes switched ON, and steady breathing – no clinging onto the treadmill rails!

🧠 Consistency > Motivation

The months I’m at home, I train 5–6 days a week in the gym.

I also work on a superyacht for 6 months of the year, where I train when I can – some weeks it’s every morning, sometimes it’s short, messy sessions – during guest trips it’ll be 20,000+ steps, or other days it’ll just be walking up the stairs a few times is my leg day 😂

Adaptation > perfection. Always.

Find movement you actually like because you won’t stick with it otherwise.

For me?

It’s lifting.

Because it makes me feel strong, capable, and like I’ll still be hauling my own suitcase at 80.

✨ Strength = Freedom

I heard on a podcast recently that older people often fall not just because of bad balance, but because they lose power.

When we’re young and we trip, we automatically adjust ourselves so we don’t fall.

But if you lose strength + power, you can’t do that quick enough, and that’s how falls happen. 😥

(Not medical advice! Just sharing.)

Building strength now isn’t about looking good in a bikini.

It’s about staying strong, capable, confident – for LIFE.

With glowier legs along the way. 🍑✨

💖 Final thoughts

Building strong, glowy legs isn’t about being miserable doing squats

You just need to:
💪🏼 Lift heavier to push yourself
✨ Choose exercises you enjoy
📈 Stay consistent
🍫 Eat enough protein

Your strong, glowy era is waiting.
Go get it my girl. ✨

P.S. If you’ve ever hated the rowing machine and assumed it was just you being weak, you need to read my Rowing Machine Trauma post – aka the story of how my family gaslit me into rowing on level 10 for two decades. 💀🚣🏻‍♀️
